Mill, however, provides various arguments for the principle, such as the general benefits accorded to society when people are free. The most famous defence of free speech in the Western philosophical canon is, undoubtedly, the argument from Chapter 2 of John Stuart Mill’s essay On Liberty. But (2) is most plausible if “desirable” means capable of being desired (see (iii) below). John Stuart Mill (1807-1873) wrote what has become one of the most compelling defenses of freedom of speech. The counter-argument would be that there are certain issues that should not be discussed publicly. So, a group or a person can interfere with another person’s liberty, against his will of course, only to prevent harm to others. This is exactly how Mill believes he can protect an individual opinion from a collective opinion. Although Brink in the second essay follows Mill's argument against censorship fairly closely, he is critical of the details and usefully develops the interrelations between the argument against censorship and the general arguments Mill makes in defense of the view that only harms to others justify limiting liberty.
