How to Cultivate a Secure Attachment with Your Child A new book suggests that parents can raise healthier and happier children by providing a balance of support and freedom. They do better academically and socially and have better physical and mental health. Attachment is one specific aspect of the relationship between a child and a parent with its purpose being to make a child safe, secure and protected. While their relationships may not be perfect, they are able to cope, be flexible, and adapt with what life may throw at them. It has associations with all sorts of positive outcomes throughout childhood and even into adulthood. Attachment theory says an infant instinctively seeks closeness to a secure "attachment figure."

The secure attachment style is categorized by a positive view of self and a positive view of others. These individuals are described as having a sense of confidence, a positive approach to others, and high intimacy in their relationships. Secure attachment is one of four types of adult attachment styles. The good news is that typically 75 per cent of children will establish secure attachment.
Secure Autonomous Attachment styles: Adults with this form of attachment live mostly in the present, can maintain stable relationships, and generally stay attuned to family members. When the mother leaves, the baby can become distressed, especially when a stranger is around.
When babies have a secure attachment, they play and explore freely from the “secure base” of their mother’s presence. Attachment is distinguished from other aspects of parenting, such as disciplining, entertaining and teaching.
