Smoking rates are high across many countries, but we know from experience that this can change quickly. People with higher levels of education are less likely to smoke cigarettes. Nearly 40 million U.S. adults still smoke cigarettes, and about 4.7 million middle and high school students use at least one tobacco product, including e-cigarettes.
By Karen Sternheimer. Differences in smoking by completed education are apparent at ages 12–18, long before that education is acquired. Among educational attainment groups, adults aged 25 years and over with an advanced degree had the lowest rate of current cigarette smoking, 4.1% (age adjusted). Cigarette smoking kills more than 480,000 Americans each year.
Rates for other educational attainment groups were (age adjusted): 24.9% among adults with less than a high school education; 6 times the best group rate "Certainly, it is fantastic that the U.S. smoking rates continue to drop," said Dr. Adam Lackey, chief of thoracic surgery at Staten Island University Hospital.
Tobacco use is the leading cause of preventable disease, disability, and death in the United States.
In the United States, for example, the annual decline in smoking prevalence between 1974 and 1985 in the National Health Interview Survey was approximately five times higher among the most educated than among the least educated.
Download the data. 1, 2 In Australia 1-3 and many other countries, 4 smoking behaviour is inversely related to socio-economic status, with disadvantaged groups in the population being more likely to take up and continue smoking. Education might also hone the skills needed to access and effectively use the health care system.
Tobacco use remains the single largest preventable cause of death and disease in the United States. Many of today’s high-income countries had much higher rates of smoking in the past, and have seen a dramatic reduction. In 2000, the UK had rates similar to Indonesia today – 38% of adults smoked.
Objective To estimate the degree to which tobacco consumption is associated with spending on a set of goods and services in Chile, especially health and education, for the total population as well as for specific subgroups.
1 In addition, smoking-related illness in the United States costs more than $300 billion a year, including nearly $170 billion in direct medical care for adults and $156 billion in lost productivity. As smoking is more widespread in deprived areas, it’s not surprising that associated diseases like lung cancer and respiratory disease are more common too.. See Section 9.2 for a detailed overview of smoking prevalence by indicators of disadvantage (e.g., education level, socioeconomic status, employment status, and occupation).
Smoking contributes to health inequality. Prior research on maternal education has shown that increased education offers mothers more connections with resources for infant health and an awareness of healthy behaviors (including exercise and not smoking). This study extends the theoretical and empirical literature on the relationship between education and smoking by focusing on the life course links between experiences from adolescence and health outcomes in adulthood.
