Monitoring water pollution with invertebrate indicator species Class practical This is a fieldwork exercise that involves sampling water from streams (ideally) or ponds, in two different situations. The different pollution intensities (saprogenic stages) are related to certain indicator organisms (e.g., bacteria, fungi, algae, amoeba, mussels, worms, insect larvae, and fishes) and ranges from polysaprobic (very highly polluted), α-mesosaprobic (highly polluted), β-mesosaprobic (medium polluted) to oligosaprobic (rather clean and clear water). This is known as an indicator species.
